Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church) and Auerbachs Keller Leipzig
The St. Thomas Church is one of 2 houses of worship in Leipzig’s city center. Home of the St. Thomas Boys Choir and a place of musical creativity; it is also the final resting place of the famous St. Thomas Cantor, Johann Sebastian Bach.
The „Auerbachs Keller“ is known throughout Germany and the world as one of the most famous and oldest restaurants. In 1497 Leipzig received the approval for trade fairs from the emperor. The same year, Heinrich Stromer, born in Auerbach in Upper Palatinate, came to the University of Leipzig. In 1519 the doctor married the daughter of alderman Hans Hummelshain, and eventually inherited his house. In 1525 he established a wine tavern in the cellar of this house. A couple of years later he rebuilt the house completely, and from 1530 on, it is associated with the new owner as “Auerbachs Hof”.Soon the property became famous as a tavern and trading house, and somehow the legend of magician Johann Faust’s ride on the barrel became associated with “Auerbachs Hof and Cellar”.Martin Luther was a friend of Heinrich Stromer, and visited him several times at the “Auerbachs Hof”.In 1625 the court was rebuilt again. In its remodelled state, in 1765, the young student Johann Wolfgang Goethe became acquainted with the building. The tavern became known throughout the whole world because of the scene in Goethes drama “Faust”, that depicts “Auerbachs Keller in Leipzig”. After the modification from 1912 until 1914 the trading house took the new name “Mädler-Passage”, but the name for the restaurant remained “Auerbachs Keller”.
